In this Paradigm Shifter from Let’s Do Something Dot Org, you’ll learn how to deal with resistance, that psychological force that keeps you from crafting the life you desire.
Resistance
Steven Pressfield, the author of the war of art, has this to say about resistance: “Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”
Resistance's Greatest Hits
See resistance strikes anywhere where we might do something that can really change our lives or the lives of others for the better..
Such as The pursuit of any calling in writing, painting, music, film, dance, or any creative art, however marginal or unconventional, The launching of any entrepreneurial venture or enterprise, for profit or otherwise. Or Any act that entails commitment of the heart. The decision to get married, to have a child,or to weather a rocky patch in a relationship.
The Traits of Resistance
Resistance is internal. No matter how much we think that it comes from someone or something outside of us… WE are always the cause.
It’s implacable, you can’t reason with it, you can’t fool it. You have to face it head on.
Resistance plays for keeps. It will try to destroy you. It’s most powerful just when you think you’ve beaten it, when the end is in sight.
Finally, resistance is infallible. Without fail, the area or project in which we encounter the most resistance is the area which we need to craft our lives the most. It is the most important to our growth and well being as human beings.
Dealing With Resistance
The solution to defeating resistance is to go pro. Stop treating your projects, your relationships, your life… like a hobbies.
That means you show up every day… no excuses. You wouldn’t skip out on work cause you were tired, or unmotivated… so don’t allow yourself to do the same for your work. Schedule your work time for projects in advance, then stick to it.
It also means you don’t take hardships or feedback personally. Sometimes work is hard, that’s not an excuse to quit, but to figure out how to improve. Seek feedback, and use it… remember, this is your job.
Finally, it means you maintain order. You wouldn’t allow your desk at work to get cluttered, so don’t allow the same thing when working on projects. Keep order so that you can work like a professional.
The End
And that’s it, if you can follow these steps. You’re well on your way to defeating resistance.
